i’ll take up your lead here and say SWEET JESUS THAT LOOK FROM ARAMIS because here is this stranger, this hotheaded boy from gascony who challenged athos to a duel to the death; saying “trust me” to athos, and he doesn’t understand what he’s asking.

but aramis does. because he’s seen athos double-check his own teammates’ information and tuck away letters addressed to “comte” and keep to the bottle and trust no one with his secrets or his past. he trusts them with his life, but aramis thinks that’s the possession athos values least.

but now athos is being asked to trust someone, and he’s looking at aramis like he wants a second opinion, which aramis knows means that athos has made up his mind and he wants a second opinion for appearance’s sake.

and aramis looks between the unlikely pair — the hurt and secretive man and the painfully young and earnest boy — and he knows, he just knows, that the boy is staying with them. someone who can look athos dead in the eye and say “trust me” and expect it, and moreover get that trust — oh, aramis isn’t letting that person go anywhere.

and porthos sees the same thing but he just shakes his head because he knows that they’re getting another teammate who’s gonna be a whole lot of trouble. (so he’ll fit in just fine.)

and don’T TALK TO ME ABOUT THE ARM CLAP athos touching d’artagnan; athos initiating contact; establishing trust; putting his hand on the place where d’artagnan’s insignia would (and will) be; welcoming him to the group. getting his friends’ approval and then claiming d’artagnan as one of them. i’m just gonna go lie under a lake of my own tears.
