The real hammerblow is when Shepard walks away after shooting Mordin. They throw the pistol away, as if enraged and horrified and disgusted at themself for being forced to go that far. Proving that they are more than willing to twist the knife just as far as it can go, BioWare had the gun in that scene be the Carnifex, which some gamers might remember as the pistol that Mordin gave them in Mordin’s Mass Effect 2 recruitment mission as a “sign of good faith.” Possibly an even bigger hammerblow is that Mordin lingers, and desperately crawls his way to try and fix the cure, but dies an arm’s reach from the console.TV Tropes, regarding the Renegade path
